Why We Chose Diu
When beach vacations are discussed, Goa is usually the first destination that comes to mind. However, for families from Gujarat looking for a peaceful beach getaway without spending long hours travelling, Diu can be an excellent alternative.
To be honest, Diu was always on our travel list but never high on our priority list. Like many travellers, we had heard average reviews and never found a compelling reason to visit. This perception changed in July 2025 when we came across videos of the newly developed beachfront Praveg Resort properties.
The beautiful beach-facing locations, premium setting, and unique resort experience convinced us to plan a family vacation during the four-day Gandhi Jayanti and Dussehra long weekend.
What followed was one of the most relaxing family vacations we have had in recent years.
If I have to describe Diu in one line:
Diu is the Mini Goa of Gujarat.
In fact, for families travelling with children below 10 years of age, it may offer an even better experience than South Goa. Alcohol is available but is generally served within hotels and restaurants rather than openly on beach shacks. This creates a more relaxed and family-oriented environment where children can freely enjoy the beaches without the typical party atmosphere.
Whether it is the peaceful shores of Ghoghla Beach and Chakratirth Beach or the lively atmosphere of Nagoa Beach, Diu offers something for every traveller. The beaches are clean, the food is good, the surroundings are close to nature, and the destination remains surprisingly affordable.

For travellers from Gujarat, travelling by car is probably the most practical and comfortable option. Road conditions are generally good and the journey itself is enjoyable.

The primary attraction behind this trip was the opportunity to experience two of Praveg's premium beachfront properties. Instead of staying at a single resort, we decided to split our stay between Ghoghla Beach and Chakratirth Beach.

By combining HDFC Diners Black Metal, SBI Cashback Card and Axis Atlas, the effective cost of the vacation reduced by approximately 43%, while enjoying exactly the same hotels, food and experiences.
Day 1: Arrival at Ghoghla Beach
We reached Praveg Ghoghla Beach Resort at around 2 PM. Check-in was smooth and hassle-free, and after settling into the room, we headed straight for lunch.
The sea-facing restaurant offered both indoor and outdoor seating. Lunch cost us ₹1,252 and the food quality exceeded our expectations. Since it was Gandhi Jayanti, alcohol was not being served due to the dry day regulations.
After a short afternoon break, we walked to Ghoghla Beach, which turned out to be one of the biggest surprises of the trip. Despite being a long weekend, the beach was exceptionally clean and almost empty. The kids enjoyed playing in the sand while we relaxed and enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere.
Later in the evening, we enjoyed high tea for ₹234 and spent some time at the swimming pool. The pool was well maintained and clean. We decided to have dinner at the resort itself as the food was excellent and Ghoghla Beach is relatively distant from the main tourist areas of Diu.
Dinner cost us ₹1,764 and all dining bills were paid using Axis Atlas.
Day 2: INS Khukri Memorial and Diu Fort
After breakfast, we checked out from Praveg Ghoghla Beach Resort and started towards Praveg Chakratirth Beach Resort. Since our check-in was later in the day, we planned a few sightseeing stops along the way.
Our first stop was the INS Khukri Memorial, which turned out to be one of the highlights of the trip. The memorial is beautifully maintained and offers visitors a chance to learn about the history and sacrifice associated with INS Khukri.

Near the memorial, we purchased four beers for ₹1,000. While this is possible, it is not really necessary as alcohol is readily available in most premium hotels and restaurants across Diu.
Next, we visited the historic Diu Fort. While the fort offers good views and historical significance, it is more of a one-time visit attraction rather than the main draw of Diu.

After sightseeing, we checked into Praveg Chakratirth Beach Resort and spent the remainder of the day enjoying the property, beach views and dining experience.
Day 3: Nagoa Beach and Leisure
After breakfast, we drove to Nagoa Beach, the most popular beach destination in Diu. Compared to Ghoghla and Chakratirth, it is significantly more crowded and commercial, but still worth visiting.
For lunch, we chose the famous Radhika Restaurant, one of the oldest and most popular eateries in the area. The food was simple, authentic and good value for money.

In the evening, we visited the Khukri Museum, located opposite the resort. We paid ₹150 for the golf cart service, although in hindsight this expense could easily have been avoided because the walking distance is manageable.
The rest of the evening was spent relaxing at Chakratirth Beach while the kids enjoyed the swimming pool. While the pool is relatively small compared to Ghoghla, it is perfectly adequate for younger children.
Dinner was again enjoyed at the resort restaurant.
Day 4: Farewell to Diu
Before breakfast, we took one final walk along Chakratirth Beach. The calm surroundings and empty shoreline perfectly captured what makes Diu special.
After breakfast, we completed the checkout process and began our journey back to Vadodara. The final hotel dining bill amounted to ₹3,248 and was paid using Axis Atlas.
On the return journey, we stopped at Gallops Restaurant for lunch.

The drive back was smooth and gave us plenty of time to reflect on what had turned out to be a surprisingly memorable family vacation.

Since this trip was planned primarily as a leisure staycation, we did not visit several attractions that can easily be added to a more sightseeing-focused itinerary:

Final Verdict
Diu was a destination that we had consistently overlooked before this trip. After spending four days here, our perception of the destination changed completely.
Diu offers something that many popular beach destinations struggle to provide today: peace, space, cleanliness, and a genuinely relaxed atmosphere. The combination of pristine beaches, family-friendly surroundings, premium beachfront resorts, and excellent connectivity makes Diu one of the most underrated coastal destinations in western India.
For families from Gujarat seeking a luxurious yet economical beach retreat, Diu deserves a place at the very top of the staycation shortlist. And when combined with the right credit card strategy, the experience becomes not only memorable but also exceptionally rewarding from a value perspective.
